In the 1920s and 1930s, Shanghai was China’s most prosperous metropolis. It was here that Chinese culture first came into close contact with Western influences, giving rise to the distinctive Haipai (Shanghai-style) culture.

Against this backdrop, China’s entertainment industries—including music, dance, and film—flourished. Night after night, old Shanghai’s dance halls came alive with song and celebration, and the unique cultural atmosphere of “Greater Shanghai” took shape and thrived.

This weekend, let us recreate the cultural atmosphere of early 20th-century Shanghai and share a nostalgic evening together in a traditional Chinese tea space.

The event will feature dance performances, tea tastings, and refreshments. We are also delighted to invite friends from a theater group to present a live performance that travels through time.
